I STILL REMEMBER WHEN KODY SENT ME THE FIRST KILLER DEMO. I WAS SITTING OUTSIDE AT MY AIRBNB IN PALM SPRINGS. THE AIR WAS COLD, AND I WAS WAITING FOR THE NIGHT TO BEGIN.

I THREW ON MY AIRPODS AND WAS INSTANTLY EXCITED FROM THE MOMENT I PRESSED PLAY. I THOUGHT THIS IS WHAT WE HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR ALL ALONG. THE SLOW, BROODING, BEAUTIFUL DOOM OF THE COMBINATION OF KODY’S VOCALS, THE STRINGS, THE PULSING BEAT AND GUITAR. IT WAS REAL.

THE SONGS THAT MAKE IT, I BELIEVE, ARE THE ONES WHERE YOU FEEL SOMETHING INSIDE THEM FROM THE ONSET. THAT EMOTION DEEP DOWN IS A COMPASS THAT GUIDES YOU TO WHAT’S GOT THE FIRE. YOU’RE LISTENING FOR THAT INEXPLICABLE TRUTH BURIED IN THE HEART OF THE RAWNESS OF THE FIRST PASS OF A NEW SONG.
